Rooftop Farms / Growing Chefs Program
Annie Novak, Coordinator, Growing Chefs at PS 132
Kallie Weinkie and Danielle Marks, instructors for PS 132
Growing Chefs is a huge hit at PS 132. Instructors Kallie and Danielle meet the students twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Over the course of the spring season, students will learn everything about food plants from root to flower. By exploring edible plants, the botanical lessons in Growing Chefs’ curriculum can focus on the nutrition and ecology behind healthy eating.
Halfway through the Growing Chefs curriculum for the spring season, students have:
- Learned about leaves, from photosynthesis to making pesto.
- Built worm bins.
- Sprouted their own seeds in the classroom.
The Growing Chefs instructors report positive feedback from the student. Kallie says, “When we arrive in the classroom, the kids cheer and pump their fists in the air!” The cooking lessons, even quick ones like learning to make fresh mint tea from their own mint plants, are very popular with students.
Because PS 132 may some day have its own garden, the Growing Chefs instructors are looking forward to taking the students of PS 132 to visit the Red Shed garden this spring.
We would love to join PS 132 for a fall and future programs, continuing our curriculum of botany-based sciences and the kitchen chemistry behind healthy-eating focused cooking.
